Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five
(or the children crusade)
adapted by Eric Simonson

Based on the classic Kurt Vonnegut science-fiction novel, Slaughterhouse-five introduces us to Billy Pilgrim, a man who becomes “unstuck in time” after he is abducted by aliens. In a plot-scrambling display of virtuosity, we follow Pilgrim simultaneously through all the phases of his extraordinary life.
The play draws on Vonnegut’s real-life experience as an American prisoner of war who witnessed the firebombing of Dresden. This satirical and anti-war story carries a unique poignancy and humour.
Following from their multiple award-winning run of Ten Days in a Madhouse, So it Goes return to Jack Studio to bring this incredible story to life with expert storytelling, immersive sound and spectacular video design.
This production won the Off West End Award for Production & Design 2025.
PRESS:
‘Quite simply stunning… The ingenuity is boundless… The versatility of the cast is impressive and it is an evening that leaves one with something to think about which is pretty much the impact the book has.’ ★★★★★ Reviewsgate
‘So It Goes Theatre just had to produce Slaughterhouse-Five at some point – and their treatment is as bold and affecting as ever… Director Douglas Baker’s striking video design… Calum Perrin and Benji Tranter’s sound and Laurel Marks’s lighting design are perfectly judged to compliment the horrors or absurdity of the action onstage. The fantastic cast (Sofia Engstrand, Alex Crook, Ben Howarth and Ethan Reid) multirole expertly… The production’s intricately considered and executed design and staging is remarkable – a truly memorable show.’ ★★★★★ Fairypowered Productions
Douglas Baker’s direction is commendable… The play is absolutely absorbing and the 95 minutes flew by. I suspect that even people who generally don’t enjoy theatre will like this production…. The actors all deserve praise for their work…This play is what theatre should be: ambitious, absorbing, funny, and poignant…it brings the world and words of Vonnegut’s book to life and stands as a brilliant piece of art in its own right. I’d encourage everyone to see it.’ ★★★★ London Pub Theatres
